I feel so small as everyone is bustling around me. I push and shove people as I try to find my mum in the never ending crowd. All I wanted to know was, what is happening? I scan the scurrying crowd for my mum but she is nowhere to be seen, it’s like there is a massive wall that is closing in around me. “I want my Mummy.” I whimper, barely whispering. “Mummy.” I feel so weak holding my suitcase it feels like it weighs 100 pounds of butter.
All of a sudden a strangled wailing sound comes flashing across the sky, almost in an instant there is a panic from the adults around the station “‘itlers comin’!” they shriek. Now it seems there are hasty goodbyes and pushing and shoving to get on the train or into the Air Raid Shelters. A friendly man comes up to me and says “Would you like some ‘elp with that love?” I stammer a murmuring reply. He lifts up the suitcase into the train and helps me up. As soon as the last child is on, the Station Conductor says “ALL ABOARD!!!” The steamer then takes off, but not until we hear the drone of the planes slicing through the sky and the deafening sound of wailing then nothing. This is all happening so fast its like a huge whirlwind is whistling around me at full speed. I feel so small, lost and utterly alone...
