Beach Clean Up! Clean and Green..Room 24 Don't Think So

My class and I went to the Eastbourne beach to clean up all of the rubbish there. We met up with a guy who was a Marine Biologist and he gave a presentation on plastic on the beach and how it can affect the wildlife. After the presentation, we got some bags and gloves and headed for the beach. When we got there we saw rubbish hiding in every pile of sticks and every little bush. Mostly we found a lot of plastic just sitting around. I found a giant plastic bag that might have held potatoes or corn or something. Other things we found were glass bottles full and broken, clothing such as socks and even some underwear, and some milk cartons. All of this rubbish made all of us feel really embarrassed at how disgusting people can be. The untidy mess of plastic and glass spread throughout the beach looked like a rubbish tornado just hit it leaving it scattered everywhere. In the end we left with about 5 full giant bags of rubbish over 100 meters. Now I feel like I should be a lot better with using too much plastic and leaving my rubbish on the beach. By Lexi

Mortified, depressed, embarrassed, these are only some words to describe how the Eastbourne beach makes me feel. It’s outrageous that their are so many lazy people in Eastbourne that can’t even be bothered to pick up their rubbish and put it into a bin, where it belongs! Fishing lines, milk bottle tops, broken glass, netting and worst of all plastic. These are just some of the many things I found left lying dangerously on the beach. We are supposed to be a clean and green environment for people to enjoy, this is not what you would expect from Eastbourne citizens. Almost everyone enjoys the beach, children, adults, dogs, but how are we supposed to enjoy it if it’s been littered with pointless rubbish? We found many broken glass bottles scattered on the ground, dirty and sharp, pointing upward waiting for it’s next victim to come place their foot on; imagine if that was you or your child. We want to make a difference and help to change this sickly, gut wrenching beach into a clean, safe environment for everyone to enjoy without having to worry about things on the beach that could end you up in the hospital. We can’t do this alone, we need your help.

Dear Oliver,
Today we had to clean up the rubbish on  Eastbourne beach. I thought, and I'm sure  everyone else will think the same way that I was so surprised about how disgusting, dirty, embarrassing and shocking our beach was; when you finished your presentation I thought “our beach can't be that bad” but when I got there and found three whole bags full of rubbish, I was wrong.

Personally I think New Zealand should start using paper instead of plastic and at least put their rubbish in the rubbish bin instead of dumping it where ever they feel like. The reason I am doing this is because I love animals, especially marine life and I hate seeing them get hurt or die, you have really inspired me and hopefully others to help marine life and keep our beaches clean and safe so we can say New Zealand is clean and green.

Here are some of things I found on the beach.

Plastic
Cans
Bottles
Fishing lines
Broken glass
Milk bottles
Milk caps
Paper
straws
Wire
Netting
Ice cream lids
Ice cream containers

And here are some words to describe how I felt.
Embarrassed
Dirty
Gut wrenching
Outrageous
Shocking

Today all the year seven and eights got given a presentation by Oliver, he is a oceanologist. He talked to us about the importance of looking after our ocean. He told us that nearly all of the litter that people drop goes to the ocean and creates massive rubbish islands and kills lots of sea animals and sea birds. The animals and birds eat or get the rubbish stuck on them. This can lead to death or sickness, It also affects on humans because we eat fish and if the fish have already eaten plastic and then we eat them then we could get sick too. We all went down to the beach and picked up rubbish. I found lots of milk bottle screws, which are dangerous because they get caught on the animals, I also found lots of food wrappers and cans. Oliver has travelled to lots of abandoned islands. At one of the islands there was a big pile of trash and lying on the trash where two dead Monk seals. I think its sad that these animals are dying. I enjoyed cleaning the beach and I am going to start doing it more often. By Sofya

I was absolutely outraged to see that much rubbish just LYING there ready for someone to either step on it or choke on it. This is horrifying to know we have that many lazy people in Eastbourne.

I thought those were awesome reflections, and as Emeline said we need help. For starters putting your rubbish in its rightful place... The BIN!!!

Awesome job those people that did reflections!!!!!

Superb!!!!!
